Citizen formed in 2009 with members located in Michigan and Ohio. The group released a handful of singles and an EP, Young States (2011). In March 2012, it was announced the band signed to Run for Cover.
On April 23, 2013, Youth was announced for release.Youth was released on June 11 through Run for Cover. On the same day, a music video was released for "The Summer". In November and December, the band went on tour with Polar Bear Club, Diamond Youth and Sainthood Reps. On December 4, a music video was released for "How Does It Feel?", directed by Rob Soucy. In March and April 2014, the band supported The Wonder Years. In September and October, the band went on tour. On October 6, 2014, a music video/UK Tour video for the second track, "Figure You Out", was released.
After 2000's Blender both Ed and Dean Roland went through divorces. The band attempted to work through these circumstances and, according to Dean, at one point had enough material for two CD's. However said material was darker and the band wanted the songs to have "a more positive, 'light at the end of the tunnel'-type vibe " The band eventually scrapped the material and completely started over.
